Description
Nos. 17 and 19 on High Street are a bank and part of a public house, dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the early 20th century. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a timber-framed and rendered structure, with some exposed framing. The walling has been rebuilt in the 20th century up to the first floor level using red brickwork. The upper floor jetties out along the High Street, showcasing arch-braced close-studding and a carved bressumer with trailing leaves. The gable facing the Market Place is adorned with early 20th-century carved barge boards and a spike finial. The roof is covered with plain tiles and includes bands of fish-scale tiles, along with two casement dormers that have segmental heads. A large red brick chimney from the 16th century is located at the rear of no. 17. The windows are mainly 20th-century casements with leaded lights, while no. 19 features a 19th-century splayed bay shop window with small panes and a shop fascia above. Inside, some good 16th-century timber framing is exposed, although it has been restored in the 20th century. The roof was rebuilt after a fire around 1970, except for the gable end.
