Description
No 16 High Street is a shop with a bakery at the rear and a dwelling above. It dates from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 19th century. The building has a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan and stands two storeys tall. It is timber-framed, with the front encased in 19th-century painted brick. The roof is made of concrete tiles and features a gable chimney made of gault brick.
The late 19th-century design includes splayed bays with sash windows and an attractive shop front that is also splayed, supported by slender iron columns and tracery, with a moulded fascia and a recessed half-glazed panelled door. At the rear, there is a single-cell 18th-century wing with a plaintiled roof, along with a further 1½ storey extension from the 19th century. Inside, a 16th-century bridging joist in the hall displays complex rib and hollow-chamfer mouldings, and there is evidence of very-close studding.
