Description

No. 50 Aspall Road is a house that was once used as a dairy for the farmhouse to the north. It has a core dating back to the 15th century, with significant rebuilding occurring later. The building is timber framed, covered in pebbledash render, and has a pantiled roof. It is one and a half storeys tall and features various casement windows, including two catslide dormers with mid-20th century single-paned two-light windows. The entrance has a 20th-century two-panel door.

Inside, a notable feature is the rare intact stud and plaster chimney. There are back-to-back open fireplaces on the ground floor, one of which has a central post from a service partition that has been reused as a lintel. The 15th-century elements include fragments of a two-bay former open hall, a front cross-entry doorway with a two-centred arch, and a front wall post with a mortice for a brace to a former open truss. Some of the framing, primarily in the gable ends, shows an unusual mid rail halved against the outside of the studs. The tie beam from the open truss has been repositioned at the lower end of the hall. The side walls and roof are largely from the 17th century or later, and the ceiling in the upper bay of the hall features chamfered joists set flat, with substantial on-edge joists in the left cell. A mid-20th century lean-to is attached to the right gable end.
