Description

River Cottage, originally one house and now divided into two, dates from the first half of the 17th century, with a facade from the mid-19th century. The building is timber framed and rendered, with the facade designed to imitate ashlar. It has a slated roof and a three-cell form, standing two storeys high with an attic. The facade features a range of three small-paned sash windows. There is a doorway in a cross-entry position, which has a 19th-century six-panel door with the upper two panels glazed, and an open porch supported by slender tapering timber columns.

Inside, there is an internal stack with a plain axial shaft and a later stack against the left gable end. The doorway to No. 16 is located in the right gable end and features a 19th-century six-panel door with an open timber porch on square posts. At the rear, there is a one-and-a-half-storey pantiled wing that has two sash windows with glazing bars facing Chancery Lane and an internal stack.

Most of the interior structure is concealed, and at the time of survey in July 1987, No. 16 was undergoing renovation. Some widely spaced first-floor studding and corner posts with deep jowls were noted, along with newel stairs. A rear addition to No. 16, now within a later lean-to, has a window with 17th-century diamond-leaded glass. The rear wall of No. 16 preserves some original panels of stippled plasterwork within the roof of the lean-to, and it is said that more elaborate 17th-century pargetted designs are concealed at the rear of No. 18. The roof pitch was altered in the 19th century, although the original structure is likely intact.
