The Paddocks and Paddocks Side

The Paddocks and Paddocks Side is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the early to mid-17th century, with additions made in 1720 and the late 19th century. The year '1720' is displayed in iron letters on the shaped gable at the front. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with extensions made of red brick, and it has plaintiled roofs.

The earliest part of the house consists of two bays at the rear right, which is one storey with an attic. Attached to the front is a two-bay, two-storey, and attic block from 1720. To the left, at right angles, is a late 19th-century two-bay, two-storey, and attic range that forms a T shape in plan. The 1720 block projects forward to the right and has recessed glazing bar sash windows with gauged brick flat arched heads, two on each floor, along with a two-light attic casement featuring a segmental head. The shaped gable has kneelers, lower convex curves, steps leading to upper concave curves, and a rounded head.

On the right return, there is an extruded stack, an entrance, and a six-light late 19th-century casement. The rear gable end stack was rebuilt in the 19th century and has a panelled shaft; this stack also serves the lower 17th-century bays, which have 20th-century casements and a raking dormer. The roof has a steep pitch, and there is a lean-to added to the rear.

The late 19th-century bays are set back to the front left, with an entrance on the right featuring a five-panel door in an open porch supported by shaped timber uprights and a raking tiled head. To the left, there is a four-light canted bay window. The building also has two two-light half dormers with bargeboarded gablets. The left end has a shaped gable following an 18th-century model, with a moulded brick window cornice and gable. At the rear left, there is a short wing with another shaped gable, and stacks with panelled shafts.

Inside, the early bays feature axial and cross axial binding beams, straight tension braces, a diamond mullioned three-light opening, a clasped purlin roof with collars, and halved principals.
