Description

Cart and Horse Cottage and Hillsdown Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 17th century, although it was cased and largely rebuilt in the 18th century, extended in the 19th century, and altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with some timber framing, and the extensions are made of brick and flint, all of which are whitewashed. It features a machine-tiled roof with a slate-roofed rear range.

The house has three bays and is one storey high with an attic. The entrance is located in the right bay and has a hood, with a 20th-century window to the far right. To the left of the entrance, there is a 16-pane sash window and a 12-pane fixed window, all featuring cambered gauged brick heads. The left side has a 19th-century canted bay window. There are three large gabled half-dormers inserted into the roof, and 19th-century ridge stacks situated between the left bays. The right gable end shows exposed struts supporting the clasped purlin roof, while the left gable end reveals exposed plates and purlins.

On the ground floor, there is a sash window, and in the attic, a two-light casement window. The parallel 19th-century rear range has a left end made of flint and brick, with a ground floor sash window and a first-floor casement window, both with cambered heads. The right end features a stack and a lean-to outshut. At the rear, the ground floor has cambered heads above doors and casements, and the first floor has three two-light casements. Inside, there is a stop-chamfered binding beam and a clasped purlin roof with curved wind braces.
