Description

Cambridge House is a house that was formerly divided into two dwellings. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and includes a mid-17th century wing, along with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with 19th century brick and painted brick casing covering the earlier timber frame. It has modern plain tile roofs that are hipped at the front elevation. There is a red brick ridge stack located to the left of center and two stacks at the rear.

The house is two storeys high and retains two units and a central stack from the 17th century range, which is incorporated into the 18th century L-plan addition. The eaves cornice features modillions, although the cornice has been removed from the 19th century cased bay on the left side. A cast iron gutter is decorated with lead leopard heads, and there is a cemented plinth.

The main entrance is on the right side, accessed by stone steps. It features an 18th century six-panelled door with a round-headed fanlight, set in a round-arched wooden doorcase that has attached columns and a dentil-enriched frieze and cornice. There are two flanking canted two-storey bay windows with late 19th century hung sashes that do not have glazing bars, along with a similar hung sash window on the ground floor that blocks a former doorway, and two hung sash windows on the first floor.

Inside, notable features include an 18th century moulded cornice, a door and door frame, a 17th century stop-chamfered ceiling beam, and a 19th century staircase.
