Description
Westlyne House is a mid-18th century house located on the south-east side of Linton High Street. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a high, painted brick plinth and a plain tiled roof, complete with end stacks. The building has two storeys, attics, and a cellar. Notable architectural features include large plaster panels and a coved eaves cornice. The main entrance is accessed by two stone steps leading to a six-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above. To the left of the entrance is a flush framed twelve-paned hung sash window, and to the right is a large three-light hung sash window. The first floor has similar but smaller windows, and there are two gabled attic windows.
Inside, the house retains original 18th century doors in the first-floor rooms, and there is an early 19th century half-panelled room to the left. Some 17th century oak panels can be found in the passage. Westlyne House, along with No. 28, became known as 'The Red Lion Inn' around 1685, was owned by the Webbs around 1720, and in the early 19th century, it became a posting inn.
