Description

No. 25 High Street is a house that dates from the 16th century and late 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame that is cased in 19th-century brick, and the front elevation is painted. It has a plain tiled roof and a gault brick ridge stack located to the right of the center. The house is two storeys high with an attic. The ground floor of the front elevation has been partly rebuilt, and the main entrance is positioned to the right of the center, featuring a 20th-century wooden doorcase with a panelled door. There are four twelve-paned hung sash windows with cambered brick arches on the ground floor, and three smaller similar windows on the first floor. The eaves cornice is made of dentil brick and is complemented by pilastered brick quoins. Inside, the exposed timber frame reveals two distinct building periods, with inserted floors, 17th-century hearths, and part of a staircase leading to the attic. The original building was altered to a lobby entry plan and raised to two storeys in the late 17th century. In 1677, the property was purchased by Thurgar, a rope maker, and in 1840 it was converted into a house and shop.
