Description
No. 20 Double Street is a house that dates back to the early 17th century, with a core from the 15th century. It is two storeys high, constructed with a timber frame and roughcast, topped with a plain tiled roof and a coved cornice. There is an internal chimney stack featuring a large, plain red brick shaft.
On the upper storey, there are three 3-light casement windows, each with a single horizontal bar across the lights. The ground storey has two 3-light casement windows with mullions and transoms, along with a mid-19th century canted bay shop window on the right. The entrance features a 6-panelled fielded door.
Inside, one ground-storey room shows exposed timbering, including a chamfered main beam and joists with stops that have bars, as well as a plain original lintel above an altered fireplace. On the upper storey, it is clear that the roof has been raised several feet; the lower wallplate is partially exposed and partly covered by plaster, but appears to be intact. The rear wall contains a long splayed scarfing joint with square under-squinted abutments and shows signs of where a long hall window once was. The principal rafters of the 17th-century roof are partly visible on the upper storey.
