Description
No. 26 High Street is a house dating from the late 16th century, with significant alterations made in the mid to late 19th century. The building has three windows and is two storeys tall. It is timber-framed and has been encased at the front in 19th-century gault brick. The roof is plaintiled and features ornamental ridge tiles. The mid-19th-century windows include those on the first floor, which have moulded cast iron lintels and small-pane sashes. On the ground floor, there are a pair of flat-roofed splayed bays with large pane sashes. The entrance door has six sunk panels and an oblong fanlight, framed by an arch of gauged brick voussoirs and a keystone that springs from pilasters. Some of the timber framing is exposed inside, with arched stud-bracing visible in the studwork. The roof has been altered and features clasped purlins. Originally, the upper floor jutted out at the front. Historical records suggest that the house served as an inn in the mid-17th century.
