Description
The Doctor's Surgery, located on Needham Market High Street, is a building dating from the mid-16th century that originally functioned as a three-cell house. It stands two storeys tall and features three windows. The structure is timber-framed and has early 19th-century roughcast plaster with broad plaster bands around the openings. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is hipped at the right-hand end, topped with an axial chimney made of red brick.
On the right side of the building, there are six-light 19th-century casement windows with transoms, while the other windows are large-pane sashes from the mid-19th century. To the left, there is a bay shop window dating from around 1800, which has a flat leaded roof and a modillioned cornice that extends over a six-panelled door nearby. The main entrance features a six-panelled door, with the lower panels being fielded and the upper pair glazed. This entrance is framed by a moulded and eared architrave and an entablature topped with a moulded pediment.
Inside, the main framing members are exposed and heavy, showcasing broad chamfers. One of a pair of four-centred arched service doorways remains intact. The building has a complete crownpost roof, where the posts at the closed trusses have plank braces, while the square crownposts at the open trusses are unbraced. In the hall area, there is some wainscotting from around 1600.
