Description
10 and 12 High Street are two houses that were originally built as one in the late 16th century, likely serving as the Waggon and Horses Inn until the mid-20th century. The buildings underwent alterations around 1700 and 1800. They are two storeys high with attics, constructed from timber framing and plaster, and feature a plaintiled roof with 19th-century flat-roofed casement dormers.
At the first storey, there are small-pane sash windows dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. No. 12 has large 19th-century windows with pilasters and a continuous moulded cornice above, while No. 10 features a 19th-century tripartite sash window. The main entrance to No. 12 is a six-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, set within panelled reveals, and is topped with an architrave and moulded cornice that has a pulvinated frieze typical of the late 18th century. No. 10 has a similar entrance but with a simpler architrave and no cornice.
Inside, No. 12 showcases late 16th-century roll-moulded beams on the first floor with channelled soffits. A narrow rear wing contains a notable staircase from around 1700, featuring turned balusters where the upper halves are barley-sugar twisted, along with a moulded handrail and newel finials in a 17th-century style. The entire roof was rebuilt with butt-purlins around 1700. Additionally, a wrought iron bracket that once held the Inn Sign is cantilevered from beneath the eaves.
