Description
This is a house and shop, built in two stages. The shop dates to the 16th century, while the house itself likely originates from the 16th century, possibly the 15th century, though it has undergone significant alterations. It is two storeys high. Originally timber-framed, the front wall is now covered in plastered masonry. The roof is tiled, with internal end chimneys constructed of red brick. The windows are late 19th-century small-pane sashes. The shop has a late 19th-century shop window with a cornice and blind box, and a 20th-century panelled, half-glazed door. The shop contains one cell of an original 16th-century building, with the rest probably incorporated into the adjacent building at No.25 High Street. The building was originally jettied towards the street, but the timber framing is largely hidden. The rest of No.23 was initially a single-storey structure, potentially an open hall. A two-storey wing was added to the rear in the 17th century, and the front range was raised and reroofed during the 18th or 19th century.
