Description

The Boar's Head Inn, located at 30 High Street, is a building dating from the 15th and late 16th centuries, with alterations made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The ground floor is cement rendered, while the roof features old red tiles and has a steep pitch. The building is two and a half storeys tall and has a nearly symmetrical facade with two outer gable ends that are jettied at the first floor, and a central gable that is recessed. The central door is flanked by quadrant bays that contain curved early 19th-century sash windows. Below the jetties are canted 18th-century sash window bays, and there is a blocked 15th-century four-centre arch door on the west ground floor. The west first floor showcases diagonal and curved timbers along with an original cusped bargeboard. There is a leaded oak mullioned window at the centre of the first floor and a blocked window to the west, with other windows being modern leaded casements. The east elevation features a 17th-century brick chimney stack with three diagonal shafts, along with 18th-century sash and 19th-century casement windows. Inside, the ground floor has an open brick fireplace with a crenellated oak beam. The heaviest exposed timbers are found in the west bay, which is the oldest part of the house.
