Description

This is a timber-framed house dating to around 1400, with an old red tile roof. Originally of the “half-Wealden” type – formerly featuring an open hall on the north side, a central cross passage, and a two-storey bay on the south – it was refronted in the 16th century. The house is two and a half storeys high. Modern casements with four lights are visible on the first floor, set within original window surrounds. Identical casements are also found in two modern dormers. A modern shop front occupies the ground floor. The interior retains a significant amount of exposed wall and ceiling timber. Two mullioned windows have been blocked on the first floor. The east wall of a first-floor rear room features a painted Jacobean frieze. Historical research (Hertfordshire Archaeology, 1973, pages 127-130) provides further details regarding the building.
