Description
The George Hotel is originally a 16th-century or earlier timber-framed building, substantially remodelled in the late 19th century. It is located on the North Side of High Street, and was formerly listed under North Street as No. 1. The front facing High Street has three storeys and is pargetted, with an old red tile roof featuring four gables. Tudor style drip moulds are present over the first and second-floor casement windows. The ground floor features a canted sash bay window. A stuccoed block extends to North Street, with a steep slate roof and banded ground floor. Five sash windows with architrave and cornice surrounds are visible on the street front. The entrance has a reeded architrave surround and a modern columned porch. Bracketed eaves are paired. Double-hung sash windows are present on the gable end facing High Street. The courtyard elevation reveals 16th- and 17th-century gables and moulded 19th-century brick chimneys. Internally, exposed 16th- and 17th-century ceiling beams are visible.
