Description
The Halifax Building Society, originally listed as the Corn Exchange, was built in 1828 by L. Vulliamy in the Greek Revival style. It features painted Roman cement and stands three storeys tall, with a two-storey central block on a larger single-storey podium. The main block has a rectangular plan oriented east-west.
On the north and east sides, there are two-storey Ionic porticoes with a continuous entablature. The north portico has four columns and two square end pilasters, with sash windows and a central pedimented door porch topped with acroteria. The tympanum displays reclining figures and a clock, flanked by single first-floor sash windows. The east portico features two columns in antis and an iron rail balcony.
The south front has a central pedimented projection with pilasters, first and second-floor sash windows, and flanking single first-floor sash windows. The west elevation mirrors this projection but has three bays. The podium exhibits banded rustication on the south side, with segmental-headed windows and a pedimented corner door, which is a late 19th-century alteration of an earlier base. The north podium has been modernly restored, featuring a carved balcony on cast iron palmette columns and modern railings. This building serves as an important focal point in the town centre.
