Description

15 Market Street is a 17th-century brick building that was remodeled in the mid to late 19th century, likely by G E Pritchett. It was extended in 1890 by the same architect, incorporating an early 17th-century timber-framed house from Devoils Lane. The exterior features painted stucco in an Italianate style, with old tile and slate roofs. The building has an L-plan layout and includes a single-storey extension in the south corner. It stands three storeys tall, topped with a parapet over a modillioned cornice.

The round-headed sash windows have elaborate surrounds; the first-floor windows are single light with panelled pilasters, moulded architraves, and keystones, while the second-floor windows are mainly two-light in apron frames with pilasters and plain heads. A projecting chimney on the south side features sunken lancet panels at the top. There is a single-storey canted bay on the south with a pilastered ground floor and a parapet of cast iron railings between moulded pedestals. A similar single-storey extension on the east side adjoins the early 17th-century gable end. This gable end is two and a half storeys tall, has a slate roof, and features round-headed, two-light windows on the ground and first floors. The property was remodeled to serve as Bishops Stortford's first Head Post Office in 1890 and holds significant townscape value in both Devoils Lane and Market Street.
