Description
The Old Post Office is a shop and dwelling dating from approximately 1520 to 1550. It has a three-cell cross-entry plan. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a concrete tiled roof that is hipped to the right side, originally thatched. A central chimney shaft was rebuilt in red brick in the mid-19th century. Mid-19th century casement windows are present, alongside two large shop windows dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The entrance features a half-glazed panelled door in a cross-entry position. The timber framing is heavy and largely complete. It includes tension-braced studding with blocked diamond-mullioned windows. Inside, the first-floor has deeply chamfered beams and unchamfered joists of medieval proportions. The roof is a crown-post design; the central post in the hall is unbraced, with slender arch braces at the posts in partition trusses. One bay of the original two-bay parlour cell on the left side was demolished and replaced with a taller parlour block in the late 19th century. A separate chimney bay exists between the hall and parlour, containing back-to-back open fireplaces which are now blocked. A 17th or 18th century lean-to dairy extension is located to the right, and further additions exist at the rear. The building possesses group value in this context.
