Description
Numbers 1 and 2 The Street are two houses that were built as one, likely dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and around 1970. The buildings are one storey high with attics and feature four windows. They are timber-framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof that is half-hipped at both ends, and which was originally thatched. There are five casement dormers from around 1970, two of which are paired. An axial chimney made of red brick from the 17th or early 18th century is present, along with two external chimneys made of 19th-century red brick on either side. The windows are small-pane casements from around 1970, and each house has a half-glazed panelled entrance door with a gabled pantiled porch. Inside, the timber-framing is mostly hidden, but No. 2 features an arch-braced open truss that shows characteristics of the late 16th century, with one brace extending through the first floor. This and other signs suggest that the house has a late-medieval core, which may have further concealed evidence. The buildings are included for this reason and for their group value.
