Description

Wilwyn and The Cottage are two houses that were originally built as one in the late 14th or 15th century, with later alterations made in the late 16th century and mid 20th century. The buildings are one storey with attics, and there is a two-storey crosswing to the right. They have a three-cell plan and are constructed from timber framing with plaster. The roof is covered with concrete pantiles, which replaced the original thatch, and there is a mid 20th century raking dormer with a casement window. An axial chimney, with its shaft rebuilt in 19th century red brick, is present. The windows are mid 20th century casements. The Cottage features a mid 20th century half-glazed panelled entrance door and a porch with a slate roof. Wilwyn has a 19th century panelled door on the side and a conservatory-porch from the 20th century.

Inside, the main range includes an open hall, which likely had its cross-entry where the chimney is located, and a storeyed cell at the left end. The cross-wing, known as Wilwyn, was remodeled in the late 16th century and features base-crucks. A splayed scarf joint with undersquinted butts at this end suggests a possible 14th century origin. The roof has coupled rafters that are smoke-encrusted. There is a late 16th century inserted first floor in the hall, with chamfered floor joists laid flat. The hall also contains an altered late 16th or early 17th century lintelled fireplace, along with an arched chamber fireplace in the crosswing.
