Description

The Hessett War Memorial is a cross-shaped memorial built in 1920, located in St Ethelbert’s churchyard, about 10 meters west of the church tower, aligned with the church's axis. It is made from Portland stone and features a tapering shaft on a rectangular plinth with a single-stepped base. The cross has a central circular boss that displays a relief-moulded laurel wreath surrounding the monogram IHS.

The main inscription is found on the west face of the shaft, crafted in incised and painted lettering. It reads: RIP / 1914 / (NAME) / 1915 / (NAMES) / 1916 / (NAMES) / 1917 / (NAMES) / 1918 / (NAMES). On the plinth, the inscription states: IN PROUD AND AFFECTIONATE / REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN / OF HESSETT / WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR.
