Description
Forge Cottage and Harrow Cottage are a pair of houses located on the Green in Palgrave. The core of the building dates to the early to mid 16th century, with later flooring and extensions in the 17th century, and further extensions and alterations in the 20th century. The houses are timber-framed and plastered, with steeply pitched glazed pantiled roofs. Originally a small, two-bay open hall, the building was extended to the right with a lobby entry and a parlour bay. The houses are now arranged as two storeys. The earlier bays have an entrance slightly off-centre, with a half-glazed, recessed door and a flat hood. There are 19th and 20th-century 2 and 3-light flush frame casement windows, with ground floor hoodboards. A 19th-century external stack is located at the left end and has a rebuilt capping, as well as exposed plates and purlins. The parlour addition to the right, now Harrow Cottage, has 20th-century windows. An axial ridge stack is located to the left, with exposed plates and purlins in the taller roof. There’s a lower two-storey 20th-century addition to the far right. The rear of the building features early, continuous, lean-to outshut additions. The interior of Forge Cottage retains close studding, chamfered binding beams and joists, with the first-floor framing concealed. Harrow Cottage has a stop-chamfered axial binding beam, straight tension braces, and altered framing.
