Description

Thornhams War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is located on the roadside next to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Thornham Magna.

The memorial features a wheel-head cross on a tapering pedestal, which sits on a single-stepped square base. It is carved from Portland stone and stands approximately 3 meters high on a cement foundation.

The main inscription is on an inset granite plaque on the east face of the plinth, which reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE THORNHAMS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (11 NAMES) THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." An additional inscription on a rectangular plaque attached to the south face of the base reads: "1939 – 1945 (2 NAMES)."
