Description
Roydon War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is located in the churchyard of the Grade I-listed St Remigius Church on High Road in Roydon, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently placed near the churchyard entrance within a low-hedged enclosure, making it easily visible from High Road.
The structure features a 3.2-meter tall wheel-head cross made of Portland stone, set on a four-sided shaft with slightly chamfered edges and a moulded foot. This shaft is atop a tapering four-sided plinth and a two-stepped base. The plinth has inscriptions in incised and painted lettering.
The inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS/ AND IN WORLD WAR II/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
