Description
House at 198 The Street has early 16th century origins but was largely rebuilt in the late 17th century and altered and extended in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with a plastered exterior and a thatched roof. Originally, it was a small two-bay open hall, but there are no surviving traces of the service or solar bays, as a floor and stack have been inserted. The house has one storey and an attic, with the entrance located towards the left, featuring a boarded architraved door and a three-light glazing bar casement. There is an internal axial ridge stack at the left end, and the right gable end has three lights in the attic, along with exposed plates and purlins. To the rear right, there is a one-storey pantiled outbuilding. Inside, the walls show tension bracing from former open truss posts that have mortices for the original arched braces. The inserted floor includes a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam, and the end walls were rebuilt and reroofed in the 17th century, featuring cambered collars and clasp purlins.
