Description

The Post Office in Thornham Magna is a house that was later converted into a shop, built in 1745, as indicated by the date on the rear wall. It was extended around 1800 and again in the 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with timber-framed walls and additional structures at the rear, which are colourwashed and plastered. It features a steeply pitched roof covered with plain tiles and has five bays across two storeys.

The entrance is located to the right of the centre, with steps leading up to a recessed half-glazed door that has a projecting hood. There was formerly a second entrance to the left of centre. The windows are 12-pane 20th-century pseudo-sash casements set in shallow reveals, with segmental heads on the ground floor and a blind window above the entrance. The building has a plinth, a plat band, and boxed eaves. There is an internal axial stack at the left end. The gable ends feature double plat bands and coped parapets with kneelers at the rear.

At the rear left, there is a one-bay, one-storey and attic addition that has scattered casements and an internal axial stack, along with a further bay added to the rear. To the rear right, there is a lean-to addition that includes a glazing bar casement. Inside the lean-to addition, the original rear wall displays panelled pargetting and the date 1745 in glass, along with ogee stop-chamfered cross axial binding beams, run-out chamfered joists, and a butt purlin roof.
