Description
The Stables is a former stable block to Thornham Hall, built between 1837 and 1838 by S. Smirke for the 4th Lord Henniker. It has been converted into five dwellings and sheds and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with rendered and ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. It is designed in a Jacobean style and forms three sides of a quadrangular block, standing at one storey with attics.
The front has five bays, with the center bay projecting and featuring a rusticated arch and quoining. Above are two small upper lights with glazing bars, and a cornice leads to a pyramidal roof that is splayed at the base. A timber turret with a cornice supports a leaded pyramidal pinnacle topped with ball and weathervane finials. The flanking bays have plinths and dual glazing bar casements with rendered lintels and relieving arches, topped with stone coped parapets. The outer bays are adorned with shaped gables that have convex curves and steps, each topped with ball finials. The ground floor features dual glazing bar casements, while the attic has single glazing bar casements, all set back from the façade.
On the right return, there is a gauged brick arch with stone impost blocks at the rear of the center, along with scattered casements. The left return has been altered with later additions. Inside the yard, each arm features a rusticated arch under stone coped gables on the returns, with the left arch blocked, and there are scattered casements and gabled dormers. The interior was not inspected.
