Description

This is a substantial timber-framed building on Broad Street, dating back to approximately 1460, with significant extensions and alterations made around 1480 and in the early 18th century. It was formerly associated with JT Terry. The building exhibits a lobby entrance plan.

The front elevation, dating primarily from the 18th century, is roughcast with a colourwashed finish, presenting a three-bay facade. A central, recessed doorway has an 8-panelled door protected by a pedimented doorcase with pilasters and a concentric fretlight. The ground floor has a mid-19th century plate-glass shop front to the left, extending around the north gable end. The first floor has a tripartite sash window to the right, with smaller 2/2 and 6/6 unhorned sashes, and two similar tripartite windows with 2/2 and 6/6 unhorned glazing bars, the central window framed by an eared and shouldered architrave. A gabled roof is punctuated by a 19th-century stack with triple octagonal flues. The north return has two 6/6 unhorned sash windows on the first floor.

An extension dating back to around 1480 runs east along Church Street; this section is characterized by a high brick plinth, exposed timber studs, and a jettied first floor. It has two former entrances, distinguished by wave-moulded jambs and ogeed heads. The early 19th century windows include a 2-light metal casement on the left and a similar 3-light casement on the right on the ground floor, and three 2-light casements on the first floor. A gabled roof, hipped to the east, covers a single-bay extension representing an original 1460 range. The jetty under this section supports a 19th-century door and display windows. A 2-light casement with early 19th-century glazing is present on the first floor. The roof is continuous with the main range, and supported on arched braces. The rear of this range has been truncated.

The interior of the 18th-century west range features a complete set of large-framed panelling to the front room, incorporating a moulded cornice, dado rail, fluted Roman Doric pilasters flanking the chimneypiece, and 6-panelled fielded doors. A central passage cuts through a stack, and two blocked doorways, formerly leading to shop premises, are marked by fluted pilasters. The remaining portion of an early 17th-century closed-string staircase is an attic flight, with square newels, arched panels, pierced splat balusters, and a moulded handrail. The 18th-century roof features staggered butt purlins, cambered collars, and principals. The east-west range was originally one room deep, with a timber frame featuring jowled principal posts. The crown post roof has square crown posts with straight braces to the crown purlin. A south wing retains at roof level one bay of a crown post roof, now without the post itself.
