Description
This is a 16th-century barn located 40 meters southeast of Chickering Corner Farmhouse. It is timber framed and covered with weatherboarding, while the roof is clad in corrugated metal sheeting. The barn has six bays, with a cart entrance situated in the fourth bay from the north and a porch on the east side. An original partition divides the two bays at the north end, which have been floored over and used as stables; there is evidence of diamond-mullioned windows on both levels. The frame is largely intact and of good quality, with most bays featuring a middle rail and reversed corner braces. The outer face of the middle rail on the west side is shallow-moulded, representing a rare example of decorative work in a barn. In the main section, the arched braces to the tie beams have been replaced with knee braces. The barn has an intact queen-post roof with a ridge piece, and there are lower additions from the 18th and 19th centuries on each gable end.
