Description

Park Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely originated as part of a larger building, dating from the late 15th century and extended to the north in the later 16th century. It is timber framed, mostly plastered, and features a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a jettied front supported by plain brackets. It is tall and wide, with various casement windows, primarily from the 20th century; the first-floor windows are positioned well below the eaves. There is a mid-20th century door with a gabled hood. Inside, the stack has a rendered shaft, and the interior has been significantly modernised, leaving little of the original structure visible. At the south end, there are two massive arched braces supporting the tie beam, part of a tall original window, and one reverse-curved wall brace. The roof over the earlier section is of raised-aisle form, featuring jowled queen-posts and heavy, almost solid braces to the arcade plates and collars. Each collar supports a plain crown-post with a double-jowled head and two-way bracing to a collar purlin, with one crown post held by a slip tenon. The roof includes two complete bays and part of a third, into which the stack has been inserted. Against this stack is a re-used moulded and embattled beam set across the arcade plates, indicating a roof likely over a service range due to its quality and lack of ornamentation. Beyond the stack is a 16th-century two-tier queen-post roof with cranked braces. The site was once surrounded by an extensive medieval deer park.
