DENHAM HOXNE ROAD Mill Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Early C17 one-cell front range; rear section rebuilt c.1700. Mid C20 stair wing to south. Timber framed and plastered with a thatched roof. 2 storeys; the taller front range has an attic. Various C20 casement windows; mid C20 door in south addition. Internal stack, heating both sections, placed within the early C17 range; the exterior portion of the shaft was rebuilt in mid C20 with 2 diamond flues. Modernised interior with nearly all the original frame concealed. Main ground floor room has an ovolo-moulded bridging beam and plain joists, almost square in section. Restored brick fireplace with 4-centred arch in room above. Roof over this section has a single row of clasped purlins and evidence for wind bracing now removed, it seems likely that this was a parlour addition onto a medieval range to the rear which was later rebuilt. The ground floor room in the rear section has re-used heavy plain joists and part of a gable end wall with heavy studding, also re-used.
