Description
Chestnut Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, built in at least two phases and forming an L-shaped plan. A lower 18th-century service wing is located to the right. The structure is timber framed with modern textured render, while the service wing has a brick underbuilding on the ground floor. The roof is pantiled, and the building has two storeys and attics. The front range consists of two cells and features two 19th-century three-light casement windows. There is a 17th-century plank door to the right and a 19th-century entrance with a four-panelled door in the left gable end. Inside, there is an internal stack with a plain 17th-century shaft that is damaged. The timber frame is largely intact, showcasing good close studding in the two main ground floor rooms, along with heavy curved and reverse-curved braces. Several windows are blocked but have chamfered and ovolo mullions, with one retaining diamond glazing bars and some early leaded glass. The staircase features a newel with the original door and a short planked balustrade that ends in a square newel post with a knob finial. The roofs have been largely rebuilt. One ground floor room contains an 18th-century corner cupboard with glazed doors. At the time of the survey in October 1986, the house was in a derelict state, with the attic floor and one gable end partially collapsed.
