Description

A barn dating from the mid-to-late 18th century is located at Scout Farm. The barn is timber-framed and originally had weatherboard cladding on the end gables and part of the south wall; the remaining walls and roof were re-clad with corrugated iron sheeting around 1980. A brick plinth runs along the base. The barn has five bays, with the central bay showing evidence of former cart entrances at both the front and rear.

The timber frame is largely complete, although a south porch and a lower portion of one bay of the south wall have been removed. Some timbers appear to be reused from the 16th and 17th centuries, but most are from the 18th century, cut with square and straight edges. The main posts have moulded jowls. The wall panels incorporate mid-posts, mid-rails, vertical studs, and long straight down braces. The roof is supported by raking queen post trusses, clasped purlins, and original halved-and-pegged rafters. Long straight wind braces and braces to tiebeams are also present. The south cart entry is characterized by short, high braces to the wall-plate, while the north entry has inset jambs and lintel.

The barn is significant because its timber frame has survived almost entirely intact and is of consistently high quality.
