Description

Numbers 1 and 2 Hall Cottages are two houses that were originally built as one, located on School Road in Elmswell. The structure dates from around 1550 to 1570, featuring a parlour block added to an earlier hall range. It has a three-cell cross-entry plan and stands two storeys tall. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a gable at the south end made of red brick from the late 18th or early 19th century. The roof is pantiled, having previously been thatched. There is an axial chimney with a shaft rebuilt in 19th century red brick, and a gable chimney from the 19th or 20th century on the left side. The windows are mainly casements from around 1980, and there is a boarded entrance door from the 19th or 20th century located at the cross-entry position.

Inside, the parlour block features high-quality late 16th century framing, including a bridging beam with an unusual form of debased and shallow vinescroll carving, and roll-moulded floor joists. The studding is closely spaced, and the mullioned windows are roll-and-cavetto moulded. There is a lintelled open fireplace. The hall range has not been examined in detail, but photographs taken during restoration suggest it was originally a single storey structure of medieval origin, with the eaves line raised and the roof rebuilt in the 17th or 18th century. The building was restored around 1980, with additional structures added to the right and rear.
