Description

Elmswell Hall is a farmhouse that was formerly a manor house, dating from around 1550 to 1580, with significant remodelling in the early 19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed and encased in early 19th-century gault brick, featuring a dentilled eaves cornice, with some earlier plasterwork visible at the rear. It has a concrete tiled hipped roof and two external chimneys from the 16th or 17th century made of orange and buff brick, along with an internal chimney of gault brick that was rebuilt in the 20th century. The structure has two storeys and three windows, with early 19th-century window openings that have flat arches made of painted finely-gauged brick, and mid-20th-century aluminium casements. The entrance features a 19th-century doorway with a 20th-century half-glazed panelled door, topped by an open pediment of painted limestone supported by enriched console brackets, likely reset from an 18th-century building. Inside, there is a late 16th-century crosswing on the left with about four bays, showcasing partially exposed framing, heavy principal posts, and cambered tiebeams. The interior also features close studding and evidence of ogee-moulded and four-centred arched doorways, as well as a windbraced clasped purlin roof. To the rear right, there is additional 16th-century work, which has been much altered, along with some 17th-century wainscotting. A partially infilled medieval moat is also present on the property.
