Description
No. 37 Church Street is a house dating from the late 16th century, which was refronted and altered around 1830. It is timber-framed with a brick facade and has a roof covered with black-glazed pantiles. The building has two storeys and features a three-window range. In the center, there are double timber doors that lead to a carriageway, topped by a late 20th-century soldier arch. To the left of the carriageway is a half-glazed 19th-century door, and next to it is a late 19th-century three-light casement window under a segmental arch. To the right of the carriageway, there is a plate-glass late 20th-century shop display window and door. The first floor has three 19th-century segment-headed casements. The roof is gabled, and there is an external stack at the rear, which was originally internal to the 16th-century house and extends north-south with its gable end facing the street. A two-storey rear cross wing from the original house still survives, along with a late 20th-century flat-roofed kitchen extension.
Inside, the timber frame features chamfered bridging beams and plain joists, with jowled principal posts. The open fireplace has been rebuilt and includes a bressumer stamped with Ionic scrolls.
