Description

This is a late 13th-century hall house with an upper floor rebuilt in the early 18th century, likely after a fire; it has undergone further alterations since. The house is timber-framed and roughcast, with a colourwashed finish. It has a slate roof and stands on a high plinth. The front has a three-window arrangement. A double timber carriage door is at the west end, and the centre has a plank door and a more recent half-glazed shop door, alongside a plate-glass display window. Above the doors is a sloping hood decorated with Greek-style split dentils. A late 20th-century three-light casement window is on the left side of the elevation. The first floor has three early 18th-century six-over-six sash windows with thick glazing bars, set in flush frames with exposed boxes. The roof is gabled with an internal gable-end stack to the west and a 19th-century stack on the front roof slope to the east. Inside, parts of the original late 13th-century screens passage doorways remain, both being blocked. The west side of the doorways is chamfered. The timber framing is of heavy scantling. A winder staircase is located in the south-east corner. The upper floor, of thinner scantling, was rebuilt in the early 18th century, with some studs in the west wall dating back to the 17th century and belonging to the adjacent property. The roof itself is from the 19th century.
