Description

Clopton Hall is a former manor house with a core dating from the late 16th century, featuring alterations made in 1681, as indicated by a date on one of the chimneys. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with rusticated quoins from around 1681 and a coved eaves cornice. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and the wings have hipped roofs. There are early 17th-century external chimneys made of red brick, decorated with diaper-patterned terracotta friezes at the base of the shafts. An axial chimney of red brick is located at the center of the main range. The house has 19th-century flat-roofed dormers with sash windows.

The layout is half-H shaped, consisting of a three-window main range with set-forward wings on either side. The building has two storeys and attics. The sashes, likely from around 1681, are pairs of 24-light small-paned windows linked by a mullion. While these are rare in Suffolk, most of the sashes may have been replaced in the 19th or 20th centuries. The windows feature flush frames and square panes with thick glazing bars. The central entrance is distinguished by giant Doric pilasters and a segmental pediment, with a six-panelled entrance door that was restored around 1980 after the removal of a 19th-century flat-roofed porch that had obscured the earlier entrance.

The interior is believed to contain 17th and 18th-century panelling, including some 17th-century panelling with an arcaded overmantel. A rear extension from 1835, which was later remodelled, along with extensive wrought iron verandahs, was demolished around 1980. There is also a partial medieval moat surrounding the property.
