Description
20 Old Market Street is a Grade II listed building, originally part of a substantial house that extended to the west, dating from the 15th or early 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a plain tiled roof and stands two storeys high. The building features an end-jettied design facing the road, supported by original brackets. It has small-paned casement windows and an old plank door. Inside, there is an internal stack with a cross-axial shaft and a small plastered lean-to on the right.
Notably, the front wall below the jetty has a blocked two-light former shop window, with one light still showing a three-centre arched head. The probable shop doorway adjacent to this window serves as the current front entrance. There is also a blocked arched doorway in the west wall. The upper floor retains intact studding, and one blocked window features square mullions. The ground floor ceiling includes a knee-braced chamfered floor beam, while the stack is a later addition. The roof has not been examined.
