Description
Stone House is a house dating from the 16th century, featuring a two-cell main range with 18th and 19th century additions to the right, including a small barn that was converted into living accommodation around 1980. The building is timber framed and rendered, with tarred weatherboards on the right return wall. It has a concrete-pantiled roof over the main block and a shallow-pitched slated roof to the right. The house stands two storeys tall with an attic on the left side and has four windows, which are two and three-light casements likely from the early 20th century. The upper windows each have a slender horizontal glazing bar. The doorway features a mid-20th century surround and a glazed door, and there is one dormer with a small-paned two-light window. A stack with a plain 18th century shaft is located against the right gable end of the main block, with an internal stack at the junction with the house to the left.
Inside, the 16th century first floor frame remains intact in three bays. The ground floor includes a two-bay room on the left, which has been reduced in size. It features storey posts with cut-back heads and exposed plain joists in one bay. The fireplace has a massive lintel and brickwork with remnants of mortar joint lining, although the opening has been narrowed. The room to the right has closely spaced plain joists and a side purlin roof. The building was a public house known as The Brewers Arms in the early 20th century.
