Description

Tudor House is a 16th-century timber-framed house with a later wing, located on Old Market Street, Mendlesham. The house originally comprised three rooms, with a wing added later that projects forward to the left. The building was restored in the 1950s. The structure has exposed timber studding and a plain tiled roof. It is two stories high, with the wing facing the road displaying jettied construction. Windows are modern casements featuring square and diamond-leaded glass. A gabled timber porch, dating to the mid-20th century, shelters a plank door on the inner return wall of the wing. An internal chimney includes a plain 19th-century brick shaft, and a later stack is present in the forward wing. A rendered lean-to addition with a plain tiled roof extends from the right gable end. Inside the main range, substantial timber studding and reverse-curved braces are visible. The hall and parlour have heavy, plain joists in their ceilings, with the hall floorbeam being unchamfered. An open fireplace is in the hall. The parlour chamber retains a 17th-century cambered ceiling, while the forward wing features heavy, irregular joists, though a later upper ceiling has been removed. The roof over the main range was not inspected.
