Description
Number 14 (Holden Cottage) and Number 16 are two houses that were originally one, dating back to the 16th century, with significant rebuilding around 1600. The buildings are timber framed and rendered, designed to look like ashlar. The roof is slated at the front and pantiled at the rear. They are two storeys high with an attic, and there was once a jetty overhanging the street, which has since been underbuilt.
The front features two mid-20th century casement windows, with the windows at Number 16 having diamond-leaded glass. The doors are mid-20th century reproduction-style battened plank doors. There is a brick stack to the right at the junction with Number 10, which has a plain narrow brick shaft. At the rear of Number 16, there is a heavy stack, with its base located within a later addition.
Inside, the upper rooms retain intact studding and show evidence of tripartite windows at the front, with two in Number 16 featuring replacement ovolo mullions. The plain joists in the ceilings are set flat, with those in the upper ceilings being reused. Number 16 also has a notable open fireplace with a four-centred brick arch, and the roof has stepped butt purlins.
