Description

Weald House is a house that was later divided into three cottages. It dates from the late 15th century, with a parlour end added around 1600 and an extension to the rear service end in the 17th century. The building underwent heavy restoration in the 1970s. It is timber framed with exposed studding and has a plaintiled roof. The house has a Wealden form and consists of two storeys with a three-cell layout. There are jetties on solid brackets, some of which have been renewed, and the bressumers show remains of moulding. The windows are casements from the 1970s with square-leaded panes. A part of the service room at the left corner has been converted into a semi-enclosed porch with a boarded side entrance door. The stack features a square, vertically-panelled shaft, while a similar but heavier shaft is found in the rear wing.

Inside, there is a 2½-bay former open hall, with the extra half-bay containing the cross-entry. An arched-braced open truss has been repositioned at the upper end of the hall, and the tie beam has a peg hole for a crown-post. The roof over the entire front range was renewed in the 1970s. The lower end wall of the hall has a crown stud with down braces, and the upper end wall incorporates re-used blades of a doorway as studs. Overall, the studding has been much altered. There is a 16th-century inserted floor with closely-set chamfered joists and a 16th-century stack in the cross-entry, which includes a partly rebuilt hall fireplace with the original lintel. Evidence of a front doorway into the service end suggests that the building may have been used as a shop. A further half-bay at the upper end of the hall is contemporary with the parlour wing.
