Description

Number 18 and Number 20 Merrythought is a building originally constructed as one house, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The facade is faced in early 20th century red brick, and the roof is plain tiled at the front and pantiled at the rear. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a former jetty to the street that has since been underbuilt.

There are two windows on the upper floor, which are three-light casements featuring a single horizontal glazing bar in each light. The ground floor has mid 20th century windows without glazing bars, with the central window now divided into two sections. The windows are topped with flat gauged brick arches. There are also two doors with four flush panels. A flat-roofed dormer on the upper floor has mid 20th century standard windows.

Inside, Number 20 has exposed 17th century ceilings, with floor beams that have barred stop-chamfers and plain joists set flat. Some framing is visible on the upper floor, and there is a newel stair located in front of the stack. The side purlin roof has most of its timbers concealed. The interior of Number 18 has not been examined.
