Description
Numbers 2, 4 and Vine House are originally one house, now divided into three houses and a shop. The building has a core dating back to the 16th century, but was largely rebuilt in the late 18th century and altered in the early 1970s. It is constructed of red brick, with a first-floor brick band and a brick dentil eaves cornice. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The building is two storeys and has attics, with a seven-window front; the windows are mostly 3-light casements without glazing bars, dating from around 1972, with the exception of the window on the far right, which is 18th century. Flat, gauged brick arches feature above the windows, and those at Vine House have been largely rebuilt. Number 2 has a projecting shopfront from the early 20th century, with single-pane windows. Vine House has a prominent late 18th-century doorway with an eared architrave, a frieze with fluted ends that support a pedimented cornice, panelled reveals, and a 6-panel raised and fielded door. A doorway was inserted in the 1970s for number 4, featuring a panelled door and a pedimented doorcase. Six gabled dormers, mostly dating from the 1970s, light the attics. A central stack has a cross-axial shaft. Internally, the main ground-floor room in number 4 retains 16th-century ceiling joists. Vine House contains a late 18th-century staircase, with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.
