Description

No 10 Newmarket is a commercial building from the 18th century, constructed of red brick with yellow brick rusticated quoins and dentilled eaves, featuring stucco dressings. It has a hipped slate roof and red and yellow brick stacks with oversailing courses. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range. A tall vermiculated keystone is located above a rusticated semi-circular arch over a half-glazed door to the right of the shop front, which is flanked by rusticated pilaster strips and Ionic pilasters. This is topped by a continuous dentilled cornice framing two 20th-century windows set in semi-circular arched stucco architraves. The first-floor plate-glass sashes have keyed segmental-arched stucco architraves. There is a splayed corner and a similar two-window return to the left. To the right, No 5 Market Street is a one-storey building with a two-window range, featuring paired plate-glass windows and a late 20th-century door set in rusticated and keyed stucco architraves linked by an impost band. The interiors were not inspected. A 20th-century extension to the right of No 5 is not of special architectural or historic interest. This listing is included for its group value, as Newmarket is an important central group with buildings surrounding the "island."
