Description
The King's Head Hotel is a 17th and 18th century coaching inn located in Newmarket. Recently, the central archway, which served as the main entrance to the lounge, has been enclosed, leading into a cobbled yard that once had galleries around it. The 17th century section of the building is two storeys high with an attic, featuring three gabled dormers with barge boards. It is constructed of thin brick and has sash windows in flush frames, complete with glazing bars and flat arches. The building has a plaster cove cornice with a bed mould and a roof covered in plain tiles. There is a stack with six octagonal detached flues, each with base moulds and united at the capping. A modern door is set within the original wood case, which includes an architrave frieze and cornice.
The 18th century sections of the hotel flank the earlier part, with one window to the west and two to the east, rising to three storeys and built of red brick. The attic floor is enclosed by a screen wall above the main cornice and pilasters. This design continues on the return front facing Newmarket, which has five windows and a central entrance. The building features rusticated quoins and a moulded brick cornice, with a slate roof and sash windows that have flush frames and flat arches with stone keys.
The entrance is marked by an elliptical central arch with rustications and a stone key, leading to a modern door. The altered interior still retains some early features, including hewn chamfered beams. The King's Head Hotel is part of a group with No 2 and is also associated with the "Wine Shop" and No 8. Newmarket is recognized as an important central group, including the buildings around and within the "island."
