Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly used as a rectory, built in 1773, with possibly earlier work in the rear wing. It is constructed of red brick, which was once colourwashed, and features a wooden modillion eaves cornice. The rear is partly plastered where a 16th-century range used to adjoin. The building has a hipped roof covered with glazed black pantiles and stands two storeys tall.
The facade has five bays with slightly inset sash windows that have glazing bars and are set under flat brick arches; the two right-hand openings on the first floor are bricked up. The entrance features a six-panel raised and fielded door with a plain semi-circular fanlight, flanked by pilasters with fret decoration and topped with a dentil cornice and broken pediment supported by console brackets. The doorway is accessed by a flight of three stone steps, with a simple wrought iron handrail on each side.
On the right gable end, there is a full-height three-light splayed sashed bay. The ground floor rooms are adorned with moulded cornices, and one room includes a fluted frieze. The well-designed staircase features three turned balusters on each tread, carved tread-ends, and a ramped handrail made of pine. Additionally, there is a notable Adam-style fireplace located on the first floor.
